CONTEXT
Hucbald wrote this work on the demand of the clerics and nuns of Marchiennes to write a life of their patron saint. Although, Hucbald, at first instance, refused to write the life because nothing was known about the saint, the clerics and nuns could eventually convince him by offering him some scattered text fragments (Ugé 2005).
ABSTRACT
Biography of St Rictrudis, abbess of Marchiennes (+May 12th c. 668). Rictrude was born out of a noble family from Gascony. In the period 629-632, she married Adalbald, a member of the royal court, with whom she had four children: Maurontus, Clotsind, Eusebia and Adalsind. When her husband was murdered, she entered the monastic community of Marchiennes, a foundation of saint Amand (ca. 640), in order to avoid a forced marriage. In the period 644-651, she became abbess of the community, which she remained until her death (Ugé 2005). Her vita comprises her life story interwoven with that of her children, Maurontus and Eusebia, who, following their mother’s example, chose a monastic life.
