ABSTRACT
Gislenus was born in Greece in the early 7th century, and studied in Athens. According to the hagiography of Philip of Harveng, he became a monk (following Basil's rule) and later priest and bishop of Athens. After a while he left Athens for Rome, where he was asked by the pope to become a missionary in Gaul. After various wanderings, he settled in Hainault.
