CONTEXT
The sermo was written in the light of the grave situation the cloister found itself in around 1100. Theoderic wanted to strengthen the identity of the community by reminding his fellow monks of the great prestige the monastery once enjoyed. He needed to do this in order to put an end to the internal disputes and in order to make the congregation persistent against the usurpations of their lands and possessions (Patzold 2000).
ABSTRACT
