According to the legend, St Barbara lived during the reign of Emperor Maximianus. She was a daughter of a wealthy, pagan man, Dioscorus, from Nicodemia. To keep her away from strange influences, her father locked her up in a tower. Nevertheless, she came in touch with christianity. Then her father had her beheaded. She was the patron saint of dying persons, especially in the case of an unprepared death. As such she was also venerated in the Northern Low Countries.

One of three miracle stories which took place in the Northern Low Countries (BHL 939, 940, 951). During the reign of Duke Reinald of Gelre (Reinald II (1339-1343) or Reinald III (1343-1361)), a man stabbed himself with a knife. Only after the duke forgave him this suicidal act at the intercession of St Barbara, he could be supplied with the last sacraments and die in peace.
