St Barbara was the patron saint of dying persons, especially in the case of an unprepared death. As such she was also venerated in the Northern Low Countries.

Because of her sinful life, a woman in a village near Roermond could not get on her dying day the absolution. Thanks to S. Barbara's intercession she still got it.
