St Barbara was the patron saint of dying persons, especially in the case of an unprepared death. As such she was also venerated in the Northern Low Countries.

A soldier was seriously wounded in a struggle near Leiden. He told the nuns who found him that, according to S. Barbara's wish, he could only die after he would have had the last sacraments. So it happened.
