According to the legend, S. Engelmund came from England. He preached during Willibrord's life in Kennemerland and died in Velsen, where he was buried. He was first mentioned in the second half of fifteenth century in the second redaction of van het Chronicon comitum Hollandiae et episcoporum Ultraiectensium van Jan Gerbrandszoon van Leiden's Chronicon comitum Hollandiae et episcoporum Ultraiectensium van Jan Gerbrandszoon van Leiden (NL0285). In 1496/97 a chapel consacred to S. Engelmund is mentioned.
