Sex: M- Bio: Frederic originated from an important family of the Ardennes and he was the uncle of Adalbéron, the bishop of Metz. Frederic was raised in the abbey of Saint-Hubert and thereafter became connected with the bishopric of Metz. He was an important advisor of the bishop, because of his talent in dealing with secular affairs. Nonetheless, out of an aversion for the shallow life of the secular world, he entered the congregation of Gorze. On the request of Richer, the bishop of Liège, he returned to the community of Saint-Hubert, where he eventually became abbot. There, he was known for upholding the severity of the monastic life. When he died in 936 (Dierkens, 2005) or 939 (Kurth, 1898; Van der Essen, 1907), he was buried in Trèves.-Status author (order, function): Benedictine Monks (OSB)

CONTEXT
Written during the reforms of bishop Walcaud of Liège in Andage (Saint-Hubert), when he transformed the canons into Benedictine monks. In relation to that, Walcaud wished to promote the piety in the neighbourhood of Saint Hubert by encouriging the worship of the local saint Beregisus (Despy 1991). Dierkens (2005) states that, within this broader reforming scheme, the work serves as a political and spirital manifest of Frederik of Saint-Hubert, that promotes his principles concerning correct behavior and spiritual life in accordance with the model of the congregation of Gorze. Next to that, Dierkens points out that the pro-Carolingian atmosphere of the vita is the result of Frederik’s political vision that not only the bishop, but also the sovereign must play a fundamental role in the reformations.
ABSTRACT
Biography of Beregisus, the first superior of the congregation in Andage (Saint-Hubert) during the first decades of the eighth century. Next to a description of the life of the saint himself, this biography also contains valuable information regarding the earliest period of the congregation in Andage. Beregise was a saint born in the neighborhood of Namur around 670. He studied at the abbey school of Saint-Trond and was afterwards active at the court of Pippin of Herstal, the major of Austrasia. On request of Pippin and his wife Plectrude, Beregise founded a congregation in the Ardennes at Andage (later known as Saint-Hubert) and became its first abbot. He succeeded in gaining the support of the aristocracy for the congregation and in expanding the abbey’s domains. Beregise died in the period 725-746)
