ABSTRACT
Life of saint Anthony the Great of Egypt (+ 356). Anthony lived as a hermit in the desert of Thebe. He failed in his attempt to become a martyr but underwent various temptations of the devil during his whole life. Demons in various disguises, such as Satan in the form of a beautiful woman or a pig, tried to lead him astray. According to tradition, the saint lived most of his life in a burial cave in the desert. However, around 310, Antony went to Alexandria to surrender himself voluntarily to emperor Maximinus Daia with the aim to die a martyr’s death. Nevertheless the emperor didn’t harm him. Anthony returned to the desert and lived an ascetic life even harsher and stricter than before.
