ABSTRACT
Life of St. Malchus of Chalcis (+ 390). At a mature age Malchus fled to the Syrian dessert of Chalsis to escape a forced marriage. He became a monk and spent some time in a monastery. The moment he left the convent to visit his family, he was captured by a group of Bedouins and sold as a slave to the Arabs. Malchus' slave master forced him to marry one of the female slaves. Malchus accepted the forced commitment but refused to break his vow of chastity, which resulted in a marriage of convenience for seven years. Eventually, after seven years, Malchus and his wife managed to escape. Malchus resumed his life as a hermit while his wife entered a nearby nunnery.
