CONTEXT
Since reading the Life of St Martin of Tours by Sulpicius Severus as a child Guibert fostered a special admiration for St Martin. During his life he devotes himself to spreading the saint's fame, for instance by urging others to write texts about St Martin (see also NaSo 522). Guibert met R. during his first or second stay at Tours. If R. ever complied with Guibert's request is contested, although judging from R.'s reply letter to Guibert he at least intented to do so (see NaSo 2312). Based on manuscript evidence Salmon equated the Liber de restructione Maioris Monasterii with the result of Guibert's appeal to R. (Salmon 1854). However Farmer refuted this identification (Farmer 1991). Guibert himself also wrote two Lives of Martin (see NaSo 515 and 516).
ABSTRACT
Letter to the scholaster R., probably a canon of Châteeuneuf in Tours, in which Guibert urges him in a playful reproach to employ his literary skills in the honour of St Martin of Tours, by pointing to the parable of the talents. R. should devote himself in particular to writing down Martin's most recent miracles.
