CONTEXT
The author was a monk from Gembloux, in all likelihood named Guibert. He dedicated the text
to the abbot of Gembloux, his namesake Guibert (1194-1204), as a reconciliation request, as he had left the community for another monastery because of the situation at Gembloux during the reign of the previous abbot, John. The choice for Saint Martin of Tours as a subject for the poem was inspired by the lifelong devotion of abbot Guibert for this saint (see e.g. NaSo 515, 516, 522, 2311).
ABSTRACT
Poem in honour of St. Martin of Tours, written by a monk of Gembloux and addressed to the abbot of Gembloux, Guibert (1194-1204), as a reconciliation request. In the text St Martin is praised as an equal of the apostles, an exemplar for prelates, a spiritual warrior, etc.
