CONTEXT
According to Guibert himself, Philip of Heinsberg, the archbishop of Cologne (c. 1130/1167-1191) and a severe admirer of Hildegard of Bingen, commissioned him to write a ‘Vita’ about Hildegard of Bingen. Guibert started this assignment, but never finished the saint’s biography. The ‘Vita’ is included in his Epistularium (NaSo 524) as an attachment to a letter that Guibert received from Bovo, a monk of Gembloux, during his stay with Hildegard. Guibert is also considered the author of a revision of of the ‘Vita Hildegardis’ of the monks Godfridus and Theodericus.
ABSTRACT
The letter, written to a monk of Gembloux named Bovo, is a praise for Hildegard and the community of Rupertsberg. The actual 'Vita' describes the life of Hildegard of Bingen from her birth up to the moment that she reveals her gift to the abbot of Disibodenberg.
