CONTEXT
Since reading the Life of St Martin of Tours by Sulpicius Severus as a child Guibert fostered a special admiration for St Martin. According to onze of Guibert's letters written around 1205, he wrote the Vita in prose at the request of both Siegfried, archbishop of Mainz, and Philip, bishop of Ratzeburg (see NaSo 524). This letters is sometimes considered the prologue of the Vita. Because of the many corrections in the text, it is possible that the only preserved contemporary version of the Vita was not the 'definitive' version of the work. In addition to this versed Vita Guibert als wrote a Vita dedicated to St Martin in prose text (see NaSo 515).
