CONTEXT
This work stems from the fascination of Guibert of Gembloux for Saint Martin of Tours (see e.g. Naso 515, 516, 522, 2311).
ABSTRACT
This Vita in two books was intended as an apology for Sulpicius Severus, the author of the Life of St Martin of Tours. Gennadius of Marseille (†496) had questioned Sulpicius' orthodoxy in his work De viris illustribus, which Guibert wanted to prove had been unfounded. However, he confused Sulpicius Severus with Sulpicius, the archbishop of Bourges †29 januari 591). The second Book in fact focuses more on St Martin instead of on Sulpicius and is intended as a preface to the entire manuscript in which it is preserved, namely a martinellus with texts collected and compiled by Guibert.
