CONTEXT
According to the legend, St Barbara lived during the reign of Emperor Maximianus. She was a daughter of a wealthy, pagan man, Dioscorus, from Nicodemia. To keep her away from strange influences, her father locked her up in a tower. Nevertheless, she came in touch with christianity. Then her father had her beheaded. She was the patron saint of dying persons, especially in the case of an unprepared death. As such she was also venerated in the Northern Low Countries.
ABSTRACT
One of three miracle stories which took place in the Northern Low Countries (BHL 939, 940, 951). On their way to the general chapter, Johannes, abbot of the abbey of Aduard, and two other abbots of Frisian cistercian monasteries were summoned to his aid by a merchant's chopped off head. At the intercession of St Barbara and with the help of the three abbots the merchant got the last sacraments.
