ABSTRACT
Life of St. Alexis of Edessa (+412). Alexis was a Roman patrician who ran away from his bride during his wedding night. He became a beggar in the nearby town of Edessa, where he lived a poor, hidden life for seventeen years. According to legend Alexis managed to convince his wife to lead a chaste life. Eventually he returned to Rome where he lived under the stairs of his father’s house for the next seventeen years without being recognized. His identity was only known after his death in the year 412.
