He is one of the four Church-fathers.
ABSTRACT
Life of Saint Jerome of Bethlehem ( + 419/420 ). He studied in Rome and Trier. After his studies, he lived for a while as a hermit in Aquileia. In 373, he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but during his trip he was felled by illness and stopped in Antioch, where he led a secluded ascetic existence for three years and eventually received his priestly ordination (377). At the request of Pope Damascus I Jerome settled in Rome, where he became the spiritual leader of a number of ascetic female communities. So he gathered some devout women like St. Paula and St. Marcella around him. He was an important Christian author and Bible translator. In the period between 391 and 406, he wrote a number of Bible commentaries, letters , homilies ... He also translated the Old Testament from Hebrew and Aramaic into Latin. In the last phase of his life Jerome visited the monks in the Nitrian desert, then he settled in Bethlehem and lived as a desert father until his death.
