ABSTRACT
Life of St. Benedict of Nursia (+480-574). At the age of fourteen he joined a community of ascetics in Enfide and later lived as a hermit for three years in a cave near Subiaco, where afterwards the monastery Santo Speco was founded. He was elected by the monks of the nearby monastery Vicovario as superior. Benedict, however, introduced such a strict regime that the brothers tried to poison him. To avoid further conflicts Benedict returned to Subiaco, where he founded his own monastic community on Monte Cassino.
