ABSTRACT
Life of St. Alexius (+412). Alexius was a young Roman patrician who ran away from his bride on their wedding night. He became a beggar in the nearby town of Edessa, where he lived a poor hidden life for seventeen years. According to legend Alexius managed to convince his wife to lead a chaste life. Eventually he returned to Rome where he lived under the stairs of his father’s house for the next seventeen years without being recognized. His identity was only known after his death in the year 412.
