CONTEXT
Guibert of Gembloux was a prolific letter writer. In addition to these letter treatises, his epistolary output also comprises a epistularium (see NaSo 524) and several letters preserved as individual letters (see NaSo 522, 2310 and 2311). According to the 'De destructione' (see NaSo 282) the letter treatises were collected into one manuscript at the request of some monks from Gembloux for their edifying character.
ABSTRACT
Collection of 14 letters written by Guibert of Gembloux during his youth en compiled into one manuscript at the end of his life (prefaced by NaSo 282). The letters are addressed to de scholaster Arnulf (1 to 6), Arnulf's brother John, a monk (7 and 8), the priest Rainer (9, 10 and 14) and Guibert's nephew, the scholaster Lambert (11 to 13). They contain but few personal information and primarily discuss religious subjects, such as spiritual combat, meditation on death and priesthood.
