CONTEXT
By the end of 1185, the abbey of Gembloux was in flames for the third time since 1136, the result of the siege of Gembloux in the struggle for power between the duke of Brabant and the alliance between de count of Namur and the count of Hainaut. The 'De combustione' is a compilation of passages from two letters, written by Guibert of Gembloux, supplemented with information from a later date. Guibert wrote the first letter shortly after the fire to the community of Rupertsberg (‘Oppidum –officium’, ed. Pertz 1848) (see NaSo 524); the second letter treats his abbacies of Florennes and Gembloux ('Angebar - praebent', ed. Pertz 1848) (see NaSo 2310). If the additional information and/or the compilation itself can be attributed to Guibert is unknown.
