CONTEXT
Guibert of Gembloux was a prolific letter writer. In addition to this epistularium, his most significant letter collection, his epistolary output also comprises a collection of letter treatises (see NaSo 2309) and several letters preserved as individual letters (see NaSo 522, 2310 and 2311). The epistularium was carefully compiled by Guibert in ms. KBR 5527-34. In this manuscript the letters are interwoven with non-epistolary texts, such as work by Joseph of Exeter. The manuscript opens with Guibert’s versed Vita Sancti Martini (see NaSo 516). Of the final two letters, or perhaps rather sermons, only a fragment is preserved.
ABSTRACT
Letter collection containing 59 letters written by, addressed to or relevant for Guibert of Gembloux. The collection was compiled (and revised) by Guibert himself, or according to his instructions, at the end of his life. The correspondents comprise, among others, illustrious figures such as Hildegard of Bingen, the scholaster Joseph of Exeter, Philip of Heinsberg (archbishop of Cologne, 1167-1191) as well as several archbishops of Mainz, e.g. Siegfried of Eppstein (1200-1230), and monastic communities, such as Rupertsberg, Marmoutier at Tours and Gembloux itself. The letters document Guibert’s efforts in building his own personal network and treat a diverse range op topics, such as events from Guibert’s life (e.g. his pilgrimage to Tours), the figure and cult of St Martin, spiritual exhortations, criticism of Guibert, a defense of his stay among the women of Rupertsberg and Guibert's Life of Hildegard of Bingen (see NaSo 512).
