Levensbeschrijving van de Heilige Maria Egyptiaca (+421). Zij werd geboren in Egypte en vluchtte op 12-jarige leeftijd naar Alexandrië. Daar ging ze aan boord van een pelgrimsvloot. Gedurende deze tocht naar het Heilige Land leefde zij als prostituee. Eenmaal aangekomen te Jeruzalem wou zij, samen met de andere pelgrims, de Heilige Grafkerk binnengaan om het feest van de exaltatie van het Heilig Kruis te vieren. Maar toen zij het gebouw wou betreden werd zij door een onverklaarbare goddelijke kracht tegengehouden. Na deze gebeurtenis zou Maria Egyptiaca zevenenveertig jaar lang boete doen in de woestijn met enkel haar lichaam bedekt door haar eigen haar.
